DESCRIPTION

 

Broad acre dry land farming dominates this part of the wheat belt. Wheat and sheep farming are the area's main types of agriculture.

Originally known as Duri-dring which is Aboriginal for 'snake crawling in the grass near campsite.', the town dates from the 1880s and was an important watering hole for prospectors on their way to the goldfields.

A 25 metre swimming pool and two 18 hole golf courses are somewhat unlikely attractions in this rather small country town.

The other towns located in the shire are Kununoppin and Yelbeni.

 

HISTORY

 

The town developed after a site for a siding on the Dowerin to Merredin railway was established.

Henry Twine was the first to lease land in the area and the town was gazetted in 1912. The Road Board was established in 1923 and the first country trotting club in the state was developed in the same year.
