DESCRIPTION

Quinns Rocks is a small seaside town north of Perth which only started to develop in the 1960s.

Suburban coastal sprawl is rapidly catching up to the once sleepy town as more and more people move into the area.

The main attraction is the beach.

HISTORY

James Cowle surveyed an offshore reef in 1867 that he named Quin's Reef. The spelling changed to a double 'n' and the origin is thought to be from Robert Quin who arrived in W.A. in 1863. Quin worked as an assistant surveyor but he died in 1886.

The Wanneroo Road Board referred to the coastal area of land near the reef as Quinns Rocks when a survey was conducted in 1925.

From the 1930s there area was used by holiday makers and shacks were constructed. The first permanent residents seem to have arrived in the early 1940s.

A caravan park opened in 1946 and ran until 2014. The shacks were phased out in the late 1950s and beach front blocks were surveyed and put up for sale.

The townsite was declared in 1962 and the named changed to Quinns in 1974 but three years later it went back to being Quinns Rocks.
