The main access point to Eighty Mile Beach lies about half way between Port Hedland and Broome on
the north west coast. It is basically a caravan park and nothing more but the beach is a lovely spot to stop and break your journey.
The fishing can be good and sea shells are often found along the beach.
It was originally known as 90 Mile Beach but the name was changed after confusion with a site of that name in Victoria.
Where the name originates is difficult to understand because this section of coast is in fact the longest stretch of uninterrupted beach in
W.A. The beach lies between Cape Missiessy and
Cape Keraudren
and the total distance of unbroken beach is 220 kilometres.
There are large inter-tidal mudflats along this coast that attract many different bird species. The mudflats are home to many
invertebrates including sponges and soft corals.
Migratory birds arrive around September and spread out to feed on the extensive mudflats.
The huge inter-tidal mudflats have been declared a wetland of international importance as it is only one of about a dozen such sites around the world.
