DESCRIPTION

The settlement is located east of the Mullewa to Morawa road and today there is a church, hall, fire shed and the odd house or two. There is also an excellent camping facility that offers hot showers, drinking water, power BBQ, shelter and lots of room to park all for a suggested donation of $10 per night.

The main building in Canna is the huge wheat silo and loading facility but back towards the main road is a place called 'the old camp'. There is also room to camp here and an interesting piece of history to have a look at.

Frank Ewin Macklin lost his wife and child during World War One. He moved to W.A. and worked on farms in this area until his retirement when he built a shack and lived here for many years. He died in the Mullewa hospital in 1968 aged 85. His was buried in the Morawa cemetery.

Looking at the little hut with few basic comforts, it is hard to imagine just how hard life would have been here especially during the long hot dry summer.

In wildflower season the area around Canna comes alive and there are a number of walking trails with excellent displays of flowers including orchids and the much sought after wreath flowers.

HISTORY

Canna was (and is) a railway siding that dates from 1915. The town site was gazetted in 1928 and 16 blocks were offered for sale. The original name selected for the siding was Pindawa but due to the similarity with nearby Pindar, this name was rejected and Canna chosen instead.

On April 27th 1929 the Canna Pioneer Store opened with a grand celebration including music from the Gutha-Canna brass band. The store continued to operate until 2003 and today serves as a local farm merchandise business but does not supply general goods to the public.

The town had only just begun to develop when the Great Depression struck but even though this slowed the progress of the town the town hall opened in 1934.
