DESCRIPTION
In 1864 a nearby granite outcrop was listed as Burancooping Rock. The name is Aboriginal in origin and is supposed to mean 'Big hill'.
The Yilgarn gold rush was the impetus for the development of the town which was gazetted in 1891. Hunt built one of many of his wells at this
site and it became a stopping point for those on the way to Southern Cross.
The railway reached Burracoppin in 1894 and so, for a time, it was the railhead where supplies for the goldfields were off loaded.
Today, looking at the quiet little town, it is hard to imagine it as a bustling centre with piles of goods and teamsters waiting to load up.
Number One Rabbit Proof Fence was started here in 1901 and continued south to the coast near Esperance and north
to the coast east of Port Hedland. When completed in 1907, the fence was 1837 (some sources quote 1832) kilometres long.
All gates and wells along the fence were numbered from Burracoippin.
Industry in the area is centered around wheat farming and the first grain elevator was installed in 1933 and was able to process up to
1800 bags a day.
The Prospector rail service has a scheduled stop at Burracoppinn.
The most significant building in town is the hotel that dates from about 1926.
Burracoppin Rock is located in a reserve just west of the town north across the railway line. There are areas suitable for caravans and motorhomes
to stop overnight and looking around will reveal some old ruined buildings.
There are only a handful of houses in the town now but surprisingly there is an oval and sports centre hidden away on the north side of town.
