Rock formations in this area date back some 2700 million years. The geological area is known as the Yilgarn Craton and encompasses many granite features.

The breakaway is vastly different to the granite outcrops but each has been shaped by the natural forces of wind and water erosion over aeons of time.

There is a walk trail leading from the parking area down into the breakaway area and the best time to take photographs is in the early morning when the sunlight brings out the different colours of the layers in the breakaway formation.

There are many birds living in and around the breakaway so it is a good spot to sit and watch for different species.
