DESCRIPTION
Borden is one of the entrance points to the Stirling Range National Park. The park is known for the variety of flowers and the number of bird species it contains. To date nearly 190 species of birds have been identified in the park. Estimates for the types of wildflowers range over 1000.
Free willy?
Hmmm.. not sure about the political correctness of this one but there is (apparently) a whale's willy mounted on one of the walls of the Borden Tavern.
The Lily
This replica of a Dutch windmill was built out of recycled bricks and timber from the old Albany jetty by Mr. Pleun Hitzert. It is a fully operational flour mill producing organic flour which is sold from the premises. There is an adjacent restaurant located in a reconstructed railway station that originated in Gnowangerup.
I guess from the above you could say that Borden's claim to fame is the Lily and the willy.....
HISTORY
Borden's name originates with a Canadian Prime Minister - Robert Laird Borden who was in office between 1911-1920.
In 1860 a police station was established at Madgitup and Sgt. George Chester was put in charge.
In 1910 a large woolshed was built and became one of the main income earners for the district.
Initially Borden was a siding on the Gnowangerup to Ongerup railway. The railway operated from January 6th 1913 to October 13th 1957.
The town site was gazetted in 1916 (another source says 1915 but is incorrect) and by 1924 the district had a school that opened with a total of 19 students. The school was conducted at its original location until 1984, when the main building was transported into town where it is still used.
The town hall was completed in 1928.
TALL TALES AND TRUE
Throw away collars
The rather oddly named 'Paper Collar Creek' was a stopping point for sandalwood cutters coming back into town. They would stop at the creek to collect paper bark with which they made collars. They would then wear the paper collars while they were in town (apparently to impress the ladies) and then throw the collars away when they haeaded back to the bush to collect more sandalwood.
