DESCRIPTION
Binningup is a small settlement on the coast, just north of Australind. The main attraction is the beach that is protected by an offshore reef. Swimming, fishing and beach walks are the main activities but there is also a local golf course.
Today, Binningup is one of the fastest growing towns on this part of the coast.
Binningup is part of the Harvey shire that also includes the towns of Australind, Brunswick, Myalup and Yarloop.
HISTORY
Originally the site of a coast watch base during World War Two, Binningup was considered so attractive, that it was developed as a holiday destination once the war ended.
A syndicate purchased farmland and after a long period of discussion with the local shire, the land was sub-divided. The name is Aboriginal in origin but the meaning is not known.
Although the town site was gazetted in 1963 its current origins date back a further 10 years when the area was first proposed as a sub-division. By 1962 there was still only one resident in the area but further development was not long in coming.
A desalination plant was established at Binningup to help supply water to the metropolitan area as rainfall continues to decrease and an alternate water source to the hills dams needed to be found.
