J.J. Simons founded the Young Australia League and established Araluen as a holiday camp for his organisation in 1929. The name is taken form an Aboriginal dialect and means 'singing waters'.
Araluen is set in a valley in the hills suburb of Roleystone. It is accessed from Brookton Highway and Croyden Road.
The park was purchased by the State Government in 1990 and a long restoration process saw the park returned to its former glory.
In 2010 management of the park was taken over by DEC.
The entrance fees to the park are very reasonable with special prices on Tuesday for concession card holders. The park has a large number of paths leading up hillsides so those with mobility problems may want to hire one of the electric scooters (shop riders) available at the park. Another alternative is the 'train' that takes visitors round the park for a gold coin donation.
The park is a wonderful place to visit at any time of year but is at its very best in spring when flowers adorn the park which is probably best known for the dense plantings of tulips.
Picnic and BBQ facilities are available at the park as well as a restaurant and gift shop.
On a value for money basis, Araluen is one of the best places to visit close to Perth city.
